Gifts!
By Dan Stremel
Director, Offices of Finance and Stewardship
Recently I began wondering how I ever got into this role as a columnist. Whose bright idea was it to ask me to write about stewardship every each issue in the Southwest Kansas Register? People have asked me many times how I determine what I’m going to write about this week, and as I’ve mentioned before, many times an idea or concept comes to mind that is pertinent to what is happening in the world around us at the present time. Over the past year and a half and 35-plus articles, I have tried to touch on many examples, events, and experiences that have related to stewardship. I’ve not exhausted my ideas for talking about stewardship and will soon return to my writing about my perceptions of stewardship as they relate to the events of our daily lives, but not today!
You see, I ran across some clippings that appear to have been scrapped musings from our editor. He apparently was trying to figure out which interview he would use for the Christmas issue and couldn’t decide what angle to take with his column. The trash can was full and the floor around it was littered with wadded up pages that would not appear in the SKR. I had gone to his office to drop off some other information for the paper, but he was gone and seeing the mess, I just had to explore a little. I had not realized until that time that Dave has ventured far and near, all throughout the land, in his quest for the ultimate editorial piece related to Christmas. As I read the crumpled up pages, I once again realized that the authors of these stories were relating important Christmas messages, and Dave was obviously having a difficult time choosing which story to focus in on.
Who would have known that he had been to Whoville, to interview Cindy Lou Who regarding the Grinch’s small heart and bad attitude regarding Christmas? Cindy, we all know, teaches us all about loving others and giving that love to others and that Christmas is not just about all of the presents. Dave even spoke to Max, the Grinch’s dog, who spoke about how delighted he was that Cindy had changed the green character into a lovable thing!
There was also the story with the cutline "Island of the Misfits" in which Dave speaks to Hermey, Yukon Cornelius, and the misfit toys. Hermey, you might remember, didn’t want to devote his life to that of a toy-making elf, and instead wanted to devote his life to dentistry. He speaks affectionately about how we are all sometimes considered misfits, but in the end are like the toys and are lovingly embraced even though we are not perfect.
Apparently Dave also has been trying to get that elusive interview with Santa Claus, but has not yet been able to get onto Claus’ busy schedule. It appears Dave was in negotiation to ride along with Santa this year as he delivered toys, but something about the sleigh being full of toys because of all the good girls and boys this year apparently has put that notion on hold as well. It makes me wonder what Dave is getting this year, a bag of coal or presents!
Another trip Dave apparently made was to Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus. Dave did interview the friend of the friend of the dad of the brother of the son of the son who was the innkeeper when Joseph and Mary arrived and who was not able to provide them with a room in the inn. Dave’s notes speak about the Church of the Nativity and the Chapel of the Manger, where Mary placed the baby Jesus.
The editor’s column has not been revealed to me, but the wadded up pieces of paper make me stop to consider the true meaning of this Advent and Christmas season. I am thankful for the many gifts and blessings that our Lord has bestowed upon my family over the past year. It is my hope that we can all be like the new Grinch with a heart filled with love for others, and loving embrace those we might otherwise consider misfits as Hermey did. It is then that we will remember that this season is about celebrating the birth of Jesus, our Savior, and the anticipation of God’s Second Coming among us in glory. May you be filled with God’s gifts during this holiday season.
