Sister Angelica, former bishop’s housekeeper, dies
WICHITA -Sister Angelica Stremel, 88, died Dec. 6, 2003, at the Sisters Adorers Wichita Center. She was a former housekeeper at hospitals, care homes, a seminary and bishops’ residences.
The Most Reverend Eugene J. Gerber presided at the Mass of the Resurrection on Dec. 10 at the Chapel of Our Lady of the New Covenant, Wichita Center. Burial followed in the community cemetery.
Sister Angelica served in the "culinary ministry to bishops" for more than 35 years, serving at residences for Archbishiop Ignatius Strecker, Bishop David Maloney, Bishop Marion Forst, Bishop Eugene Gerber, Bishop Stanley Schlarman and Bishop Ronald Gilmore. She spent 21 years in Dodge City.
Sister Angelica (Kathryn) was born Feb. 24, 1915 to the late Jacob and Barbara (Urban) Stremel. She was a native of Mary, Help of Christians Parish at Loretto. She entered the postulancy in Wichita on June 7, 1932, received the habit and her name, Angelica, on Aug. 2, 1933, professed temporary vows on Aug. 6, 1934, and perpetual vows on Aug. 10, 1939.
Her assignments took her to Oklahoma, New Mexico, Missouri and back to Kansas. She worked in the Sisters’ residence at Okarche and Alva, Okla.; at the municipal hospital in Stillwater, Okla.; a city hospital in Artesia, N.M.; St. Francis Hospital in Carlsbad, N.M.; Bethany Seminary in Oklahoma City; Via Maria, a rest home in Mulvane; and later St. Luke Hospital in Marion. She was a cook and housekeeper for bishops from 1963 to 1998.
Sister Angelica was preceeded in death by her parents; sisters, Dorothy and Sister Dorothy ASC; and brothers, Father Peter, Sim, Bill, Joe, Victor, Aloysius and Neal. Survivors include a sister, Agnes Miller of Warrinsburg, KY; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial has been established with Retirement of Sisters, ASC, 1165 Southwest Blvd., Wichita, KS 67213.
