Sister Janice Grochowsky, CSJ (Congregation of St. Joseph)

‘Never cease to be amazed at God’s

initiative and action in your life’

Sister Janice Grochowsky, CSJ, is Chancellor and Director of the Tribunal for the Diocese of Dodge City.

SKR: Why did you enter the religious life?

Sister Janice Grochowsky, CSJ: The identifiable starting point is a “religious experience” I had in April 1986.  The presence of Jesus seemed almost tangible.  Over the course of several months, I began to have a sneaking suspicion that God was calling me to religious life. Eventually, I yielded to God’s invitation.

SKR: Why did you choose your particular congregation?

Sister Janice:
I had contact with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wichita attending St. Mary School in Newton.  As a young adult I came to know a Sister Adorer of the Blood of Christ, but by my mid-20s I had established a deeper relationship with the Sisters of St. Joseph. SKR: What have been your greatest challenges as a religious?

Sister Janice: I believe subconsciously I was drawn to religious life for community.  While living with several adult women in the same house has its challenges, my greatest challenge has been when, because of a new ministry and its location away from Wichita, I had to live alone.

SKR: What have been your greatest joys?

Sister Janice: The day I celebrated profession of perpetual vows has probably been the most joyful day I have experienced as a sister.

SKR: What kind of ministries have you been/are you involved in?

Sister Janice:
I served seven and a half years in parish pastoral ministry: a year and a half in my home parish—St. Mary in Newton, and six years at St. Mary in Derby.  I worked two years for the Diocese of Wichita in the Tribunal Office before coming to the Diocese of Dodge City to minister in the Tribunal Office.  I have been in Dodge City for 10 and a half years.

SKR: Please offer a quote that makes a statement about the value of religious life for you.

Sister Janice:
Never cease to be amazed at God’s initiative and action in your life.  God called me to the Sisters of St. Joseph, and his plan for me continues to unfold as it should.  I need only to be open and trust in God’s invitations to serve God and God’s people.
