Pastoral Ministry Formation Program

Father Urban to present in-depth

tour of the New Testament

The Pastoral Ministry Formation program of the Diocese of Dodge City will present the course, “Introduction to the New Testament,” beginning Jan. 8, 2011 and running for nine Saturdays through May 7.
The instructor will be Father Reggie Urban, pastor of Prince of Peace Parish in Great Bend. The course, which will be offered at Interactive Television sites throughout the diocese, can be taken for three credit hours or for personal enrichment.
Throughout the nine sessions, Father Urban will take participants on a tour of all the books of the New Testament, “talking about the authors, and the intent of their message, their writing, and their epistle or Gospel. There are 27 books in the New Testament, so we’ll go through two or three in each session.” The course focuses on the literature, theology, and development of the New Testament.  Students will explore questions of authorship and critical methods of biblical interpretation from within the perspective of faith.
“Jesus’ urgent message about the in-breaking of the Kingdom of God into this world provides the theological center of New Testament studies and the grounding for Christology, Ecclesiology, Morality, and Missiology,” Father Urban said.
He will also present an “historical schema on all the important statements that have been made by the Catholic Church about the Bible, especially the Constitution on Divine Revelation and Vatican II.”
Father Urban is a native of St. Mary, Help of Christians Parish, in Loretto, Kans.  He received his B.S. in the study of philosophy at Conception College in Missouri, and his M.A. in the study of Scripture at St. Thomas School of Theology in Denver. Father Urban was ordained to the priesthood in 1977 by the Most Reverend John J. Sullivan at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Grand Island, Neb.  During his pastoral assignment in North Platte, Neb., he taught at St. Patrick High School, and in Grand Island, Neb., at Central Catholic High School.  He has been involved in Scripture study groups throughout his priestly life. In 2003, after serving in the Diocese of Grand Island for 25 years, he returned to Kansas to the Diocese of Dodge City.
He said that he hoped participants of the classes would gain “a more professional knowledge of the New Testament, and more appreciation for scriptures. This is an invitation to people to come and grow in their appreciation and knowledge of the Christian scriptures, the New Testament.”
“THEO 1013 Introduction to New Testament” will be presented from 8:30 a.m.-Noon, Saturdays: Jan. 8, 22; Feb. 12, 26; March 5, 19; April 2, 16; and May 7. If taking the class for credit, the cost is $150. If taken for personal enrichment, the cost is $75. These prices do not include texts.
