Stremel named chairperson of Christian Brothers Employee Retirement Plan

Local man takes financial skills to national level

Daniel M. Stremel, chief financial officer for the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City, has been named chairperson of the Christian Brothers Employee Retirement Plan (CBERP) based in Chicago. He replaces Brother Louis Althaus, FSC, who led the Board since 1998.  Brother Louis stepped down from the position as chairperson, but remains on the board.
Stremel, who has served on the board since 2001, was nominated as chairperson in September 2014. He chaired his first meeting in March 2015.
Stremel plans to focus on three areas. First, he is committed to well trained and involved board members who understand the obligation to sound fiscal administration, fiduciary responsibilities, and the protection of employee retirement benefits.  Second, he is dedicated to continuing strong working relationships with outside consultants – investment advisors, actuaries, legal counsel, and auditors. Finally, he will continue nurturing relationships with participating employers regarding plan benefits, changes and comparative information about retirement plans in general.
“There are many Catholic organizations that need to consider a defined benefit pension plan, and CBERP, having existed for 50 years, can assist these organizations,” stated Stremel. “Defined benefit plans are viable and the CBERP has a long track record of taking care of the Catholic Church.”
The Christian Brothers Employee Retirement Plan serves more than 15,000 participants and retirees in more than 260 Catholic organizations and 10 dioceses.
Stremel began working for the Diocese of Dodge City as the associate comptroller in 1988. He became CFO in 1990. He is a graduate of the University of Kansas, Lawrence (1984) with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and business administration. His leadership roles in the Catholic Church over the past 27 years include serving on the executive committee of CUP II (Catholic Umbrella Pool, Catholic Mutual Group) for nine years, three as president; and the Diocesan Fiscal Management Conference (DFMC) executive committee for eight years, president of the conference in 2009.
Stremel was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontiface, the Papal Cross of Honor, by Pope Benedict XVI in 2013.  This award is the highest medal awarded to a layperson by the papacy, and Stremel is one of only a few diocesan CFOs to receive the honor.
