Where have we been, where are we at, and where are we headed in this Confirmation conversation in the Diocese of Dodge City.
The revised document for the Sacrament of Confirmation consists of three parts:
Part I - Norms of the Sacrament of Confirmation - contains the canonical and theological norms of the sacrament of Confirmation primarily found in the Code of Canon Law and the Rite of Confirmation.
Part II - Sacrament of Confirmation Guidelines for the Diocese of Dodge City - contains revised guidelines addressing formation of adults and young people for the sacrament of Confirmation, as well as the outline of the Confirmation liturgy.
Part III - Sacrament of Confirmation Preparation Process Overview - is a new component added by Bishop Brungardt. Bishop's initial draft of this document contained his own study, reflection and experience of the sacrament of Confirmation. He then sought feedback and comments from pastors, parish life coordinators, DREs and confirmation catechists. Part III is the fruit of this process. This section contains the misunderstandings about the sacrament to be avoided, provides an easy-to-learn description of the sacrament of Confirmation, outlines important components to be included in the preparation process and cites several key statements about the sacrament of Confirmation from various Church documents.
Bishop Brungardt wishes to make it clear that Part III is not intended to replace the Confirmation curriculum or text a parish uses in its preparation process. Rather, this section is intended to provide direction and guidance to assist the pastor and catechist in using the formation material of the parish's Confirmation process. Part III is intended to be a resource to catechists, not the primary curriculum.
