‘...I was sent to belong to you’
Some have expressed surprise at my choosing to retire in Dodge City, I am told. That is not surprising in itself, I guess.
I am from southeast Kansas, after all, just as far as you can get from southwest Kansas. It was the place that gave me life, and family, and language, and small-town upbringing, and early formation. In so many fundamental ways, it made me. I can never thank God enough for those Pittsburg years.
I spent most of my priesthood in the city of Wichita, after all. The people I knew longest are there. The events that mattered most took place there. The memories that remain dearest are there. In so many fundamental ways, it made me, too. I told the priests when I left that I never wanted to be anything other than a priest of Wichita. I can never thank God enough for those Wichita years.
I have now been here for nearly 13 years, after all. And that makes all the difference. I have come to love this land, its empty spaces, its overpowering sky, even its unending wild wind. I have come to love the people of this land, resilient, resourceful, always ready to re-invent themselves. In so many fundamental ways, you and the land have made me as well. I told you in July 1998 that the Lord somehow wanted us, from that day forward, to work out our salvation together.
And so it has come to pass. And so, as far as I can see, will it continue. This is my place now, because it is your place, and because I was sent to belong to you. I can never thank God enough for these Dodge City years. And they are not yet ended. And other surprises are yet to come.

Algunos han expresado sorpresa en mi decisión de jubilación en Dodge City, se me dijo. Eso no es de sorprenderse, me imagino.
Soy del sureste de Kansas, después de todo, tan lejos como ustedes puedan estar de Kansas suroeste. Este fue el lugar que me dio vida, y familia, y el idioma, y la educación provinciana, y la formación temprana. En todas las formas fundamentales, me hizo. He venido a querer a la gente de esta tierra, resistente, ingeniosa, siempre lista para re-inventarse a si mismos. En tantas formas fundamentales, ustedes y la tierra me han hecho también. Yo les dije en julio de 1998 que el Señor de alguna manera, nos quería, desde ese día en adelante, para trabajar juntos por nuestra salvación.
Y así ha venido a pasar. Y así, como lo puedo ver, eso continuará. Este es mi lugar ahora, porque es su lugar, y porque fui enviado a pertenecer a ustedes. Nunca podré agradecer a Dios lo suficiente por estos años Dodge City. Y ellos aún no han terminado. Y otras sorpresas están aún por venir.
