When it compares women and men with ‘heavenly beings,’ or with ‘angels,’ Psalm 8, verse 5 calls us ‘a little less’ than they are, and hints that they are a ‘little more’ than we are.
What is that ‘little more?’ As a thousand-year-old prayer had it, their role is ‘to light and to guard, to rule and to guide.’ They do this in three ways.
First, they have a vast, and an intimate, knowledge of each one of us, and they know how to use it. Their knowing comes very near the secrets of our human hearts.
Second, they are here to make up for what is lacking in our own decision-making: they have a ‘fixed will’ to help us, whenever it is ‘necessary,’ and, even more, also when it is even slightly ‘useful.’
Third, then there is the what and the how of their subtle actions on our behalf. They have only to think us, and they are right there with us, these mysterious creatures from the spirit world. They are there especially, our theologians have always told us, where we tend to fail.
There are some angelic actions that are outside us: they keep us safe from threatening dangers that only a higher intelligence could possibly see; or they help shape conditions around us that will make for our ultimate happiness, kneading the circumstances in such a way that shows a genius-more-than-human at work within us.
There are some angelic actions that are inside us: the angels find there, in our minds and in our hearts, room enough for actions they alone can see. Facets of things that have never crossed our minds are clear to them; they can help us choose wisely in complicated matters calling for instant decision; and they can help us apply the practical rules from case to case, and even to help us see and to judge when no hard and fast rules are available.
Such is this gift of God to all of us, this extraordinary friend, this Guardian Angel. One would think that we would be always appreciative of this ‘outside help’ once we have learned of it.
But that is not always the case. We will often be unable to detect this fresh idea from out of nowhere, this wisp of wise advice, this faint impulse to go to the left rather than to the right. Often these things will catch us off guard. Often they will escape us. Often we will be none the wiser for all this ghostly help.
Were it otherwise, it would be a serious loss to our developing what we should develop: a strong and mature moral life. We would not be serious about taking responsibility for what we think and for what we do. We have to practice … and practice, and practice … if we ever hope to be responsible. Without this hard work, we might remain mere puppets, always waiting for the next rescue by friendly hands from afar.
Then too, the help of these blessed spirits is so special, so strong, and so subtle, that their own work often appears to be our very own work. And this should not surprise us: really wise counselors in our rough and tumble world do these same hidden things over and over again, day after day. They so plant their own way of thinking, so deeply into your own way of thinking, that you will swear before the Judge and the Almighty, that this new thought comes directly from your own unrecognized genius.
Angelic advice and assistance is cut from that very same cloth. The Guardian Angel was made to be both adviser and counselor in this same sense. We do not need to know where the illumination comes from. We do need to know when to stop talking. And we do need to know when to bow our heads, and to thank God for the Gift.
Un poco menos, un poco más
Al comparar a hombres y mujeres con los «seres celestiales» o con los «ángeles», el versículo 5 del Salmo 8 nos describe como «un poco inferiores» a ellos, sugiriendo que ellos son «un poco superiores» a nosotros. ¿En qué consiste ese «poco más»? Como reza una oración milenaria, su función es «alumbrar y guardar, regir y guiar». Lo hacen de tres maneras.
En primer lugar, poseen un conocimiento vasto e íntimo de cada uno de nosotros, y saben cómo utilizarlo. Su conocimiento llega muy cerca de los secretos de nuestros corazones humanos.
En segundo lugar, están aquí para suplir las carencias de nuestras propias decisiones: tienen una «voluntad firme» de ayudarnos siempre que sea «necesario» y, más aún, incluso cuando resulte mínimamente «útil».
En tercer lugar, está el qué y el cómo de sus sutiles intervenciones en nuestro favor. Basta con que piensen en nosotros para que estén ahí mismo, a nuestro lado; estas misteriosas criaturas del mundo espiritual se hacen presentes —como siempre nos han dicho los teólogos— especialmente allí donde solemos fallar.
Hay acciones angélicas que se desarrollan fuera de nosotros: nos protegen de peligros amenazantes que solo una inteligencia superior podría percibir, o ayudan a configurar nuestro entorno para favorecer nuestra felicidad última, moldeando las circunstancias de un modo que revela una genialidad sobrehumana actuando en nuestro favor.
Otras acciones angélicas tienen lugar en nuestro interior: los ángeles encuentran allí, en nuestras mentes y corazones, espacio suficiente para realizar acciones que solo ellos pueden ver. Para ellos resultan claras facetas de las cosas que jamás han pasado por nuestra mente; pueden ayudarnos a elegir con sabiduría en asuntos complejos que exigen una decisión inmediata, así como a aplicar normas prácticas a cada caso concreto, e incluso a ver y juzgar situaciones para las que no existen reglas fijas ni absolutas.
Tal es este don de Dios para todos nosotros: este amigo extraordinario, este Ángel de la Guarda. Cabría pensar que siempre valoraríamos esta «ayuda externa» una vez que hemos llegado a conocerla.
Pero no siempre es así. A menudo seremos incapaces de detectar esa idea nueva surgida de la nada, ese leve susurro de sabio consejo, ese impulso tenue de ir hacia la izquierda en lugar de hacia la derecha. Con frecuencia, estas cosas nos tomarán desprevenidos. A menudo se nos escaparán. Muchas veces ni siquiera nos daremos cuenta de toda esa ayuda invisible.
Si fuera de otro modo, supondría una grave pérdida para el desarrollo de aquello que debemos cultivar: una vida moral sólida y madura. No nos tomaríamos en serio la responsabilidad de nuestros pensamientos y acciones. Hemos de practicar... y practicar, y practicar... si albergamos alguna esperanza de llegar a ser responsables. Sin este arduo trabajo, podríamos quedar reducidos a meras marionetas, siempre a la espera de ser rescatados por manos amigas llegadas de lejos.
Además, la ayuda de estos espíritus bienaventurados es tan especial, tan poderosa y tan sutil, que su labor a menudo parece obra nuestra. Y esto no debería sorprendernos: los consejeros verdaderamente sabios, en este mundo tan agitado, actúan de la misma manera oculta una y otra vez, día tras día. Logran arraigar su propia forma de pensar tan profundamente en la nuestra que juraríamos, ante el Juez y el Todopoderoso, que ese nuevo pensamiento brota directamente de nuestro propio genio, hasta entonces desconocido.
El consejo y la asistencia de los ángeles siguen esa misma pauta. El Ángel de la Guarda fue creado precisamente para ejercer esa función de consejero y guía. No necesitamos saber de dónde procede la iluminación; lo que sí necesitamos saber es cuándo dejar de hablar, cuándo inclinar la cabeza y cuándo dar gracias a Dios por el Don recibido.
