CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF DODGE CITY
Monthly Notes from Bishop Brungardt
and the Diocesan Staff
January 2013 --- Vol. X, No. 11
From Most Rev. John B. Brungardt, Bishop of Dodge City:
We offer our sympathy to Father Jim Dieker on the death of his mother, Dorothy Agnes Dieker. Her vigil is Friday, January 11th, 7pm and her funeral mass is Saturday, January 12th, 11am. Both at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Westphalia, KS.
We hold Fr. Jim, his mother, and all their family in our prayer.
WORD WORKING – Lent 2013
“One does not live on bread alone.” Jesus tells us the first Sunday of Lent.
Bro. Andre of “Andre’s Hearth” writes: Life is busy – there is no doubt about that. There is always something to do, something to occupy the mind. There is never enough time. In the midst of the busyness of the day, we find time to take nourishment, to grab a bite to eat. As we take time to eat physical food, it is important to remember that we also need to take time to be fed spiritually.
Word Working allows us to do just that...live on the Word that becomes flesh and blood.
This Lent amidst our year of faith, I invite and encourage you to allow the Word to nourish you and your faith. Gather as family, with neighbors, with fellow parishioners perhaps those with whom you are familiar and those you may not be and allow the Word to work.
I pray that the Lord will open each of our hearts to the power of the Word and increase our faith. My prayers continue to Advent blessings to be abundant for you and yours and that Christmas may open even more fully the gifts of God's love for us all. Remember Jesus loves us more that we can ask or imagine!

PRESBYTERAL ASSEMBLY IN APRIL
My Dear Priests,
For sometime now, I have been working with the Presbyteral Council and the Continuing Formation Council on having a Spring Presbyteral Assembly. I have decided to have an Assembly April 25-26 in Garden City. I ask that all active priests reserve these dates and make every effort to participate fully in the Assembly. Retired priests are most welcome to participate to the degree that they wish.
I feel that we have some very good times together: the October Convocation, the Pre-Lenten Day of Recollection, and our Annual Retreat, as well as, our monthly gatherings in Deaneries. But I felt that a piece was missing: a time we could gather to focus on our formation as a presbyterate and together address issues of common pastoral concern.
Father Rene Labrador has agreed to host us at the St. Dominic Parish Center. Father Rene has also made arrangements for a block of rooms to be reserved for us at the Holiday Inn Express. In consultation with the Councils, I have decided that the expense of the motel room may be reimbursed by your place of assignment. Details are included below.
The schedule is still in process. We will gather late morning of Thursday, April 25th and will conclude by early afternoon of Friday, April 26th. The agenda is also still in process. I continue to work with the Presbyteral Council and the Continuing Formation Council. As plans and details unfold, I will apprise you of them.
I look forward to what I envision to be day filled with grace that can only help but provide even more energy and vision to our shared pastoral ministry for the good of the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City.
My prayers continue to Advent blessings to be abundant for you and yours and that Christmas may open even more fully the gifts of God's love for us all. Remember Jesus loves us more that we can ask or imagine!

From Sr. Janice Grochowsky, CSJ, JCL, Chancellor:
The Annual Parish Report forms will be sent electronically to pastors and parish life coordinators by January 15, 2013 (hopefully sooner). The deadline to return the forms will be February 22, 2013. In addition to the sacramental data sheets for baptism, confirmation, marriage and funeral, please remember also to complete the history data form. If you wish to submit a computer or database generated report for the sacramental reports, that is fine as long as the information we are requesting is included.
As of January 8, 2013, there were several parishes whom I had not yet received a DRE report form for the Fall 2012 safe environment lesson. January 8 I emailed the DREs (and a copy to the pastors) to remind them of this.
Remember, too, that a second lesson is to be taught (for grades 3-12) during the winter months of 2013. These are due to be returned to me by March 1, 2013.
