For possible use as one draws to close the Year of Mercy. Click HERE for a Prayer of Consecration to Merciful Love.

CAUTION: a man named Michael Cypert has presented himself in surrounding States as a Roman Catholic priest, or an Orthodox bishop, or an Episcopal priest.  Mr. Cypert was found and, as there were warrants out for his arrest, he was taken into custody in Hays about two weeks ago.  Today (10/26/2016) he was able to bail out of jail.

Mr. Cypert has multiple criminal charges pending, several of which pertain to obtaining funds through false pretenses.  There is no evidence to support that he is an ordained minister of any religion.  If you have any interaction with this man you are strongly urged to give him no money, discourage parishioners to speak with him, and if warranted, contact the Ellis County Attorney's Office at (785) 628-9405.

Liturgy Preparation Aid for Advent and Christmas from the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions: Dear Colleagues, attached, please find a liturgical preparation aid for the seasons of Advent and Christmas.  It contains: The full text of a Rite of Reconciliation of Several Penitents with Individual Confession and Absolution, alternate readings, music suggestions, sample penances, a liturgical calendar advisory for the seasons of Advent and Chrism, a summary of Lectionary citations for Sundays and Solemnities of the seasons,  the text of the Christmas Proclamation (to be sung before the Mass at Midnight), the text of the Proclamation of the date of Easter (to be sung before the Mass on Epiphany). Once again, this is provided as a free resource to you, your dioceses, and parishes.  Since 1969, it has been the mission and privilege of the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions (FDLC) to provide liturgical formation for the Dioceses of the United States. Many thanks to the Confraternity for Christian Doctrine, to the USCCB, and to the International Commission on English in the Liturgy for their kind permission to use and distribute their copyrighted material.

From Mark Roth, Director of Development

From Fr. Ted Skalsky & Deanna Johnston, Marriage Family Life & NFP Team
We have updated the Diocesan NFP page of the Marriage and Family Life section of the website. Visit to see an updated listing of teachers, classes that are happening in the diocese, and online classes that are available.  There is also an excellent video from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee posted that is a wonderful introduction to what NFP is and why couples should consider using it in their marriage.  It is a great resource to share with engaged and married couples in your parish.

From Eric Haselhorst, Director of Stewardship

I know we are in the middle of stewardship renewal 2016, but, I want to draw your attention to your stewardship efforts for the coming year. Annually I publish stewardship bulletin inserts – get them here. To get more mileage out of these short reminders and to help parishes, I created images with each bulletin insert. See attached sample. I recommend you use these images in the following ways:

1. If you have email lists, each image can be scheduled to send on specific day for the entire year.

2. Most social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter each allow content to be scheduled to post automatically. Instagram does not have a built in scheduling tool, an outside service such as Hootsuite will allow scheduling to Instagram. (you can also send scheduled content to Facebook, and Twitter at the same time with Hootsuite or similar service FYI.)

Here is how the stewardship office has handled this content. Each image is titled with the date it is to appear. I schedule each image to automatically post to the Diocese Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts a week prior to the corresponding reading. People can contemplate the message during the week.

Also, the Stewardship email list will receive these weekly images. All images being sent to social media and email recipients are scheduled to send on Mondays at 7:50 AM. Each post is titled “Weekly Inspiration November 27, 2016 (1st Sunday of Advent)” You are free to use any message you wish.

Here is the best part, now that the work is done, everything will be on autopilot for the rest of year.

Here is the folder where the images are stored online. I can send the images in a compressed folder via email upon request.

If you or your staff is not familiar with the Facebook Scheduling tool, here is a short video showing how to do it.

This will help automate and make your stewardship messages more consistent throughout the year. If you need any help at all in this matter I am happy to assist.

From Coleen Stein, Director of Catechist Formation Pastoral Ministry

Formation in Liturgy welcomes all involved in liturgical ministry:  Lectors, Ministers of Holy Communion, Ushers, Greeters, Sacristans, Music Ministers, Priests, Deacons, Liturgy Commission Members, RCIA teams, Art & Environment Committees, Members of the Assembly. Those serving the liturgy of the Church need to have an understanding of the liturgy, an appreciation of particular ministries and their relationship to other ministries, and a willingness to give of their time and talent for the glory of God and for the sake of the assembly. Bishop Brungardt encourages every parish to have one or more parishioners prepared with a Liturgy Certificate so they serve the parish as a resource for the source and summit of the life of the parish, the Liturgy. To obtain the Diocesan Certification in Liturgical Ministry one needs to complete the two core courses and three electives for credit in the Pastoral Ministry Formation Program. The first class for the Liturgical Ministry Certificate begins this fall. Click HERE for a booklet on formation for Liturgical Ministry
The Diocese of Green Bay has created Pokevangelization a resource that builds upon the Pokémon Go phenomenon by developing an intentional approach to evangelizing those who are playing Pokémon Go. This presents a huge opportunity for outreach and engagement with young people and their families. Read the Article and Download the Resource.

The 2016 supplement for the diocesan necrology, “Priests on the Prairie,” is now available. If you didn't pick up your copy at Scripture Day, I will send them out in the mail. A copy of this volume, originally published in 2007, should be in the sacristy of every church in the diocese. Some priests may also have personal copies of this necrology. The 2016 supplement has 34 additional biographies of priests who served at any time in assignments in southwest Kansas. These include pioneer priests and priests who have died since the last supplement was published in 2011. Pastors will receive a packet with the number of supplements for each of their assigned churches.

High School Youth Rally – November 19-20
On Tuesday, November 29, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. there will be a training session on the use of the Prepare Enrich Instrument for marriage preparation or marriage enrichment. This instrument is part of the required marriage preparation process in the diocese. Anyone who is involved with marriage preparation in our diocese should be familiar with the way to administer this instrument and to review the report with the couple preparing for marriage. While there are many ways to successfully use the instrument, it does require some knowledge of the content of the report and the willingness to spend time with the engaged couple. The instrument can be very helpful in focusing on the strengths of a couple and on the areas in which they could profitable work to improve their relationship. Fr. Ted Skalsky will give the basic introduction to the instrument and an overview of the contents of the resulting report. Fr. Reggie Urban will share his experience on how to use the report and the workbook that is part of the Prepare Enrich resource material. The session will be held in the Conference Room of the Chancery and a lunch will be served. The session is open to anyone who works with marriage preparation including those who are already experienced with using the Prepare Enrich instrument.
Engaged Encounter: Michael and Lindsay Mazouch are the contacts for Engaged Encounter in this diocese.  The EE program is in need of young Catholic Couples who have been married at least 7-8 years to help with the Encounter weekends.  If any priest knows of such a couple, please phone Michael or Lindsay at 620-792-6290.  Their email address is This email address is being protected from spambots.
