August 2014 Monthly Notes

Monthly Notes from Bishop Brungardt
and the Diocesan Staff

August 2014 --- Vol. XII, No. 8

From Most Rev. John B. Brungardt, Bishop of Dodge City:

► Stewardship Corner

August: Parishes should be completing final drafts of their Time/Ability form, and their Tithe/Alms form.  Is there a particular theme to emphasize this Fall (egs., the four pillars in general, one of the pillars, the stewardship definition, our call to joy in the Lord, etc.)?  The Fall calendar dates should be finalized: homilies, distribution of forms, lay witness talks, stewardship fair, etc.  Is the Stewardship Council and/or Pastoral Council actively involved?  See other details on pp. 5-6 of our Recommendations and Ideas guide.  Let Eric or I know if we can assist.

► Ordained Priestly Vocation Corner

August: Brother priests:  The boys and single men in our diocese observe and imitate the generous love we priests show to those in our parish and wider community: lovingly celebrating the sacraments, being present with a warm smile in our community events, kindly assisting a family that is grieving, compassionately visiting the sick, faithfully praying.   Father Wesley and the vocation team, or I will be glad to assist you in any vocation matter.

► Convocation – is scheduled for Sunday, October 5, 2014 through Thursday, October 9, 2014.

The schedule is available HERE. Please submit a response by September 12 and can be submitted HERE or by contacting Alba Ortiz ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ), 620-227-1525.

► Bishop John Brungardt invites the faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City to join in this prayer with our brothers and sisters in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City (the archdiocese directly to the south of us).

“In response to a satanic black mass scheduled for Sept. 21 in Oklahoma City's Civic Center, Bishop Carl A. Kemme is joining Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City and Bishop Edward Slattery of Tulsa in asking the faithful to pray a novena to St. Michael the Archangel.

The novena of prayer leads up to the Feast of the Assumption, Aug. 15 – to be prayed from Wednesday, Aug. 6 through Thursday, Aug. 14.”

From Sr. Janice Grochowsky, CSJ, JCL, Chancellor:

Political Activity vis-à-vis 501(c)(3) Organizations: Click HERE to access a Memo from our Diocesan Attorney Tamara Davis pertaining to political campaigns and the caution to take when approached by a political candidate to use parish facilities or to distribute campaign materials.  A bulletin insert about this issue is also available.

TESTIMONIAL OF SUITABILITY – A reminder that if a priest or deacon ministering in the Diocese of Dodge City is going any place outside the diocese for any ministerial activity, we will need to send a Testimonial of Suitability to the appropriate diocese.  The same is true for any priest or deacon coming into the Diocese of Dodge City for any ministerial activity: we need to receive a Testimonial of Suitability from a diocesan representative or, if it is a religious priest, from an appropriate authority of his religious congregation.

From Daniel Stremel, Director of the Finance Office:

Fr. Charles Mazouch, who has worked with the Diocesan Finance Office for years on parish accounting software, is available to assist parishes, pastors, and bookkeepers with parish accounting and census software issues.  Fr. Mazouch is especially knowledgeable with Parish Data Systems (PDS) software.  We are grateful to Fr. Mazouch for offering his talents in this important area and would encourage you to contact him at the rectory in Olmitz if you would like to enlist his assistance.  You are also welcome to contact myself or John Ackerman here at the Chancery Office as well if you have questions or need further help.

Mark Roth Pic

From Mark Roth, Director of Development:

Fruit of the Vine – Work of Human Hands

You may recall in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s that the diocese sponsored a program called “God’s Little Green Acre”, a program to support seminarian education in the Diocese of Dodge City.

The program has recently been resurrected, but with a few more options.  The program is now called “Fruit of the Vine - Work of Human Hands” and offers two ways to participate:

Fruit of the Vine is for individuals who would like to pledge profits from their earthly labors, such as profits from crop production, sale of livestock, oil production, wind generation profits…etc.

Work of Human Hands is designed for individuals or businesses who would like to pledge a portion of their business profits, annual income or simply give a cash donation to support our seminarians within the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City.

Participation in the program will not only support our seminarians, but it will also provide a reminder to others who see your plaque or sign to pray for vocations, and will encourage others to participate as well. Please prayerfully discern supporting seminarian education in the Diocese of Dodge City through “Fruit of the Vine - Work of Human Hands” by completing one of the applications (Click here for Applications and more information) and returning it to me at your earliest convenience.  If you know of others who might be interested in participating, please list their names as well so we can contact them too.

Thank you in advance for your generous support and consideration of this program.  If you need further information or if I can be of assistance to you in any other way, please feel free to contact me.
