►World Day for Consecrated Life to be celebrated February 4, 2012.
In 1997 Pope John Paul II established February 2 as a day to celebrate World Day for Consecrated Life. He wrote that this celebration “is intended to help the entire Church to esteem ever more greatly the witness of those persons who have chosen to follow Christ by means of the practice of the evangelical counsels and, at the same time, is intended to be a suitable occasion for consecrated persons to renew their commitment and rekindle the fervor which should inspire their offering of themselves to the Lord.”
Everyone in the diocese is invited to join with Bishop Brungardt in demonstrating our appreciation for the women and men religious in our midst by attending a special celebration Saturday, February 4, 2012, at the Dominican Motherhouse in Great Bend with Mass at 10:30 am followed by a special meal.
Please RSVP to Becky Hessman, 620-227-1530 by January 20, 2012.
Pastors please indicate whether you intend to concelebrate.

►A reminder that all students in our parish religious education programs and schools must also receive safety training each year. In addition to the grade-appropriate lessons that have been available for several years, this year Bishop Brungardt approved the dvd set from the St. Cloud, MN diocese as an alternative to using the lessons. Regardless of which format is chosen to train our students, this year (because we will be audited and must provide the proof) each DRE and principal needs to turn in to me BOTH the log sheet of when the lessons or dvd were presented to the students AND the report form that is signed by both the DRE or principal and the pastor. I urge you to not procrastinate providing these training sessions to our students and to turn in these documents to me as soon as all of the students in your program or school have received safety training. Click here for the web page containing the lessons, the log sheets and the report forms.
►By mid-January I will be emailing the forms for the annual Parish Report. This is the report that calls for the detail regarding the reception of the sacraments: name of recipient, date the sacrament was received, name of minister, etc. These will be due back to me by February 29, 2012.
►Attached you will find pdf files of the USCCB Committee on Divine Worship Newsletter. I wish to point out some articles you might find helpful:

September 2011 (p. 34) An article about Eucharistic Prayers and Concelebration

►A Terrific Opportunity for College Students
Great News! The Catholic Extension Society has provided complete scholarships for 50 college students--25 men, 25 women--from the Diocese of Dodge City to attend the Kansas Catholic College Student Convention in Lawrence (hosted by Benedictine College) February 10-12! It covers hotel, meals, fees, entertainment. Any student who is from our diocese and is a fulltime student at any college in Kansas is eligible.
To receive the scholarship, you have to register through Fr. Wesley Schawe at the Diocese of Dodge City. All he needs is the registration form, a copy of your student id, and proof of your residence in the diocese. Let him know if you're interested, and spread the word!
This is a great weekend! Click here for details.
Some KCCSC clarifications
• The scholarship is also available to someone who goes to college in the Diocese of Dodge City (Barton County Community College, Pratt Community College, etc.), even if you are not originally from this diocese. If so, you just need to submit the completed registration form and a copy of your student ID.
• As I start to receive requests (which I am!), the scholarships will go to the first 50 forms I have in my hands (25 men, 25 women). I’ll keep a short waiting list for each group in case a cancellation happens. So don’t wait!
• Because Catholic Extension is being so generous, they ask that anyone who receives their grant commit to attending the entire conference, from the Friday night keynote through the closing Sunday Mass.
►Dinners with Bishop John
The Office for Priestly Vocations will be sponsoring four “Dinners with Bishop John” for boys and single men and their pastors in the Spring semester of 2012. What a great opportunity for those young men who love the Catholic Faith and may have a vocation to the priesthood (whether they know it or not)…
Sunday, January 29th, 6-8 pm St. Dominic, Garden City (high school students in the GC deanery)
Sunday, March 4th, 6-8 pm Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe (high school students in the DC deanery)
Sunday, April 15th, 6-8 pm Sacred Heart, Pratt (high school students in the GB deanery)
Friday, April 20th, 6-8 pm Bishop John’s residence, Dodge City (single men out of high school residing in the Diocese)
Pastors: Please put these dates on your calendar! Your help will be extremely important for this event. Your invitation will be the primary encouragement for their attendance. Bishop John and I will join your deanery gathering in advance of the dinner to visit with you about the event.
A family-size poster will be inserted in every SKR at the end of January! The prayer and support of every member of our diocese is so important for our seminarians and for ordained priestly vocations for the Diocese of Dodge City!
►Parish Vocation Visits
Pastors: have you discovered that weekend in 2012 when you could really use the opportunity to be away from the parish(es)? Have you decided which weekend in 2012 that Fr. Wesley could come to your parish(es) to raise awareness of priestly vocations? Could you make those the same weekend?
Some available weekends (as of January 2, 2012)
• February 18-19
• February 25-26
• March 3-4
• March 10-11
• March 31-April 1
• April 21-22
Of course, there are weekends beyond April available. And of course, you’re welcome to be in the parish when I come as well.
