Monthly Notes from Bishop Gilmore
and the Diocesan Staff
February 2010 --- Vol. VIII, No. 1
From Bishop Gilmore:

I invite you to “Word Working” Lent 2010.

To learn or review the Word Working method of prayer, view the following short training videos at
•    A Place at the Table
•    Respect
•    Respectful Communication Guidelines
•    Mutual Invitation
•    Word Working Method

We will not offer ITV preparation sessions this year.  Instead I offer you these short training videos (from 4 to 8 minutes) in English and Spanish.  They may be used by individuals or groups at any time to review or learn the Word Working method of prayer.

Materials for Word Working Groups will be published in the Southwest Kansas Register
February 14 – Materials for the first and second Sundays of Lent
March 7 – Materials for the third and fourth Sundays of Lent
March 21 – Materials for the 5th Sunday of Lent and Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion
Word Working materials are also available at

Groups begin meeting the Week of February 14th.  Word Working Groups will meet each week anticipating the upcoming Sunday of Lent.

I ask you to take note that Word Working uses cycle “A” readings.  At the Rite of Election, I assure the Elect of the whole Church’s support during their very special Lent as they journey toward the waters of baptism.  As we turn our attention especially to the scrutiny gospels even if we do not have elect to scrutinize, we show that we as a church are journeying with the elect not just this parish or that parish.

I also ask that you pay special attention to the method of mutual invitation which is more than a gimmick but a discipline of prayer that can be used in so many other venues.  It is a method that ensures that everyone can speak and be heard.  Therefore it makes room for the Spirit to speak and be heard.

Below is my letter of invitation for Word Working – Lent 2010 that appears in the wrap around with the January 31, 2010 issue of the SKR.

January 2010

I invite you to “Word Working” Lent 2010.

Please be in solidarity with the Catechumens of our Diocese, of our world-wide Church as they and we journey toward Easter as our special Lenten Scriptures work on on your on our diocese.

“Word Working” is a style of scripture reflection, a method of scriptural prayer, a distinctive way of being engaged by God’s Word so as to be shaped by that Word for God’s work both within and beyond our Church.  “Word Working” draws from ancient “Lectio Divina”, a method of prayer that our Holy Father says will lead us to a new Springtime.

“Word Working” uses “respectful communication guidelines” and “mutual invitation” as ways to help ensure an open place in groups and in our hearts for the Word to work.

These disciplines of prayer are deceptively simple and at times seem to be overly restrictive but while they are not glamorous they are important.  Vince Lombardi had it right: you have to know the basics, blocking and tackling.  To avoid these, spell doom for any football team.  In some way, that can be true for us in prayer...which in the end is far more important than any game.

So I ask during this Lent, as you allow the Word to Work on you along with our Catechumens, please pay ever close attention to the basics, mutual invitation and respectful communication guidelines.

Becky Hessman of my staff is ready to help you.  Please contact her at 620-227-1530, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

I hold you in my prayer.

Most Reverend Ronald M. Gilmore
Bishop of Dodge City

Re:                  The Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion-February 21, 2010

The Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion is Sunday, February 21st at the Cathedral.

Enclosed/attached is a form to list the names of the catechumens to be elected and the candidates to be called from your parish.  Please also include the number of family, friends, guests, etc., who will be present for the Rite and/or meal.  Please return the completed form no later than Thursday, February 11th, to the attention of Peg Schulte, PO Box 137, Dodge City, KS 67801, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., 620-227-1545 (fax).

The catechumens who are elected will sign the Book of the Elect at this Rite.  If you have people sign a "parish" book of the elect, you might want to consider what the Rite of Sending says: "…if the signing of the elect is to take place in the presence of the bishop, it is omitted here." (#539).  I would ask that you allow this ritual action of signing the book of the elect to be reserved for the Rite at the Cathedral.

I will not greet each of the elect and the candidates who have been called individually during the ceremony; I will do that at the reception that follows the Rite.

Please contact Peggy Schulte, 620-227-1531 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if there are any questions.  She will either be able to help you or direct you to someone who can.

Sincerely yours,

Most Reverend Ronald M. Gilmore
Bishop of Dodge City

World Day for Consecrated Life is February 2nd, the Feast of the Presentation.  In the US we observe it on the following Sunday which is February 7th this year.

Please include a prayer within your prayers of the faithful on that Sunday for all those in our diocese and beyond who serve through lives of consecration in religious life.

The next issue of the SKR will feature religious life in our diocese.

I am grateful for the women and men religious who add to the quality and texture of our life, ministry, and mission as the diocesan Church.

Fr. Marvin moved on Monday, December 28th, to Lakewood Rehabilitation Center of Haviland, 200 Main, Haviland, KS 67059.  Phone is 620-862-5291.  Marvin asked that I share this recent move with you.  His condition remains unsettled with him experiencing a great deal of anxiety and depression.  He appreciates our prayerful support.  So, let us continue to keep him in prayer.

+Ronald M. Gilmore

From Msgr. Brian Moore, Director of Continuing Formation of Priests, Director of Seminarians

Mr. Donald Bedore is to be ordained to the diaconate on Saturday, 29 May, at 10:00 a.m. at the Cathedral. Everyone is invited.  This is being published now so that those who want to come may place the date on their calendars.  There will be a lunch count request at a later date.

PRIESTS' DAY For those who like to plan well in advance, we will have a priests' day at the Cathedral on Tuesday, 5 October. This replaces the Convocation during the time when we are having the Good Leaders, Good Shepherds program. It will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at about 4:00 p.m., and will be followed by the priests' appreciation dinner at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Dodge City. That event should be over by no later than 6:30 p.m.

From Becky Hessman, Coordinator of Vocations:

In November, St. Dominic Parish held an event for all parishioners and their families.  The event began with a coffee and dessert bar, followed by the video Fishers of Men and a presentation by the Coordinator of Vocations on how to encourage vocations.  If your parish would like to do something similar, please give me a call!

I received an email from a parishioner saying that three generations of men attended the event and enjoyed the program.  What a hopeful sign…a son, a father, and a grandfather spending an evening together to learn more about the vocation of priesthood.

Thank you St. Dominic for the wonderful event!

Two college men from our diocese attended Quo Vadis the first weekend of January.  I heard they had a great weekend.  Please keep them in prayer.  I am grateful to Fr. Ted Stoecklein for his presence and support during the retreat.

Called & Gifted Workshop is Saturday, March 6, 9:30-4:30 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City, with Mass at 5 p.m.  Called & Gifted is a major vocational initiative in our diocese.  Discerning the ways you have been uniquely gifted by God is essential for meaningful discernment of God’s calling in your life.  Please encourage people to register for the March workshop.

•    An English and Spanish workshop will be given simultaneously on March 6.
•    The workshop includes PowerPoint notes, a Spiritual Gifts inventory and other helpful materials.
•    A promotion flyer is provided at in both English and Spanish (right
column under documents).
•    Registration is needed by February 23 for meal and materials.  There is no registration fee for 2010.
Workshops are supported through our parish-diocesan stewardship partnership in the Diocese of Dodge
City.  A free will donation will be accepted.
•    Register on line at or call Becky Hessman 620.227.1530.

From Steven Polley, Director of Youth & Family Ministries / Religious Formation

I am sure that many of you have heard the wonderful stories from both our young people and adults regarding the pilgrimage to Kansas City and NCYC last November.  Truly it was a pilgrimage as we did journey to a sacred place where Jesus was present.  We encountered Christ in not only word and sacrament but in the presence of each person at NCYC.

On January 24th we held a reunion for NCYC and on this day close to one third of the group returned to continue sharing stories and to continue our pilgrimage.  One thing remains certain, the excitement of NCYC remains.  With this in mind, everyone has been challenged to continue making a difference in their parish.  To be disciples and evangelizers so that great things will continue to take place.  They too have been encouraged and invited to continue their journey by taking part in our three major diocesan youth events being held over these next two months.

On February 13 – 14 we will hold our annual JOY (Jesus, Others, You) retreat for freshman and sophomores.  One month later, March 13 – 15 will be our next TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) experience for juniors and seniors.  And finally, March 27 – 28 is our annual high school youth rally here in Dodge City.  I invite you to challenge and encourage each of the young people in your parish to respond to these events.  They are not only life giving, but life rewarding.

I thank you for all that you continue to do.

The Gerber Institute for Catholic Studies at Newman University will present a panel discussion called "Reconciliation and the Death Penalty: What is the Way Forward?" from 7 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 26, in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center on the Newman campus. The event is free and open to the public.

The event will include a look at the history of the death penalty in Kansas, the current legislative initiative to abolish it, and the Catholic Church's stance on capital punishment. It will also focus on the perspectives of individuals who have lost family members to murder yet oppose the death penalty, and the possibilities for healing and reconciliation following such traumas. The event will include questions from the audience.

Panelists include Therese Bangert, SCL, Father James Billinger, and Sue Norton and Kristi Smith, both members of Murder Victims' Families for Reconciliation (MVFR), a national organization of family members of victims of both homicide and executions who oppose the death penalty in all cases. Smith is a resident of Kechi. Her father, James Edwards, was killed after he chased two men who had been shooting at his neighbor.

The Gerber Institute for Catholic Studies at Newman University is designed to strengthen the Catholic identity of Newman by promoting scholarly work and interdisciplinary dialogue that explores Catholic thought and practice in educational, philosophical, political, social, and cultural life. The theme for the institute's programming through spring 2010 is "Reconciling Differences."

The Catholic Diocese of Wichita will host a showing of the documentary "The Miracle of Father Kapaun" by Wichita Eagle videographer Travis Heying at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, in Performance Hall, inside the De Mattias Fine Arts Center at Newman University.

Father Emil Kapaun was a Kansas priest and Korean War hero from Pilsen who led an extraordinary life and may be on the road to sainthood. He has been nominated for the Medal of Honor and could become just the third American-born Roman Catholic saint. His story was presented in an eight-part series by the Eagle which concluded Sunday, Dec. 13. Read more at
