Feast of Corpus Christi brought to streets of Liberal

See the musical slide show of the event by clicking here. Click on the photo at right to see the photos alone (includes extra photos).

The streets of Liberal came alive June 14 with the rat-a-tat of a drum and the soft lilt of the flute as several dancers in masks and large, bright orange manes trailed a Corpus Christi procession led by Father Jim Dieker and Deacon Ruben Sigala.
Amid the sounds of drumming was the chanting of the Rosary, a prayerful invitation of sorts to the many onlookers who peered out their doors at the colorful procession.

With police blocking the cross roads to protect the marchers, the procession -- dozens of people in prayer; a statue of St. Anthony and the baby Jesus held high; streamers wafting through the air -- began at the old St. Anthony Church at 9:30 a.m. and processed the 15 blocks to the newer church.
The event doubled as a fund-raiser for the parish, and included Mass, followed by lunch served in the gymnasium, and included several games for the kids on the church grounds.
Once at St. Anthony Church, the group separated, a Spanish Liturgy of the Word held in the church, and an English Liturgy of the Word in the gym. When it was time for the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the two groups joined together outside where Father Dieker and Deacon Sigala stood under a cloth shelter adorned with a portrait of Christ and of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Every now and then a member of the congregation would venture a look upwards, as dark, moisture-filled clouds threatened, but never released the forecasted showers. Before long, the clouds gave way to blue skies and many of those gathered breathed a sigh of relief.
After Mass, some of the crowd of approximately 300 filtered into the gymnasium where home-made meals were sold to raise funds for different faith communities. Some opted to stay outside watching the orange-maned dancers continue to entertain, and some led their excited children toward the games.
Midway through the afternoon, Father Dieker found himself temporarily jailed -- along with several others -- until some generous soul came along and paid the $1 ticket price to get the smiling priest out of the makeshift cell.
