a spirited success
Editor's Note: After deadline for the Southwest Kansas Register, the Register learned that the Wine Tasting Event raised approximately $20,000, a "significant improvement" over last year's event.
They came from across the diocese, dozens of people with a palette prepped for participation in the Ninth Annual Charity Wine Tasting fund-raising event to benefit the many programs of Catholic Social Service.
Tickets were $25 to the formal event, which was held at The Club at Stone Ridge in Great Bend April 16, and began with a “Wine 101” seminar presented by Roger Fowler of Standard Beverage, and his wife, Elaine. Among the interesting information shared during the seminar was the advice offered by Elaine, that one should always use real drinking wine for cooking, and not a beverage labeled “cooking wine.” When she gave Julie Gleason, formerly of Dodge City who now lives in Texas, a taste of “cooking wine,” Gleason responded with a sour grimace. After the seminar, as recording artist Richard Falcon, Jr. displayed his versatility on both electric and acoustic guitars, individuals slowly filtered to several tables lined with wines from Germany, France, Argentina, Italy, Australia, Chile, the United States, and from right here in Kansas.
Other individuals lined up in an adjacent room where a bevy of hearty meals disguised as hors d’oeuvres awaited.
In a hallway lining the dining area were tables filled with dozens of items donated by generous individuals and companies for a silent auction. Following the wine tasting, Kenny Schremmer and Bernie Kaiser of Schremmer Realty Auction and Appraisers began a live auction, selling more than 50 donated items, each in rat-a-tat succession as bidding increased.
Among the many items were a private wine tasting party, Royals’ tickets, a stay at Great Wolf Lodge, and many, many other items and vacation packages.
