'Lifting Up Our Hearts'

Workshops highlighting new Missal to

begin with presentation, Feb. 9

While many people have heard that a new English translation of the Roman Missal is coming, some may not know the details of this important change.
According to the recommendation of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, these new texts will go into effect in all U.S. parishes on the first Sunday of Advent in 2011.

Parishes in the Diocese of Dodge City will have the opportunity to become familiar with the new English translation by participating in several upcoming events and programs. Among these is “Lifting Up Our Hearts: Praying with the New Translation of the Roman Missal,” a new offering from the Catholic ministry organization, RENEW International.

This process will be launched with a presentation during a noontime luncheon meeting at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Feb. 9, 2011. Later that evening, a televised workshop will be broadcast via the ITV network from 6:30–8 p.m. Greg Kremer, Director of Ministry Expansion for RENEW International, will give an overview of the new translation changes and how Lifting Up Our Hearts can be part of parishes’ plans. Kremer is an experienced presenter, who has worked extensively in many facets of parish ministry.

“This workshop represents a timely opportunity to plan as parishes,” said Bishop Ronald M. Gilmore.  “Staff and laypeople involved in liturgy planning or adult faith formation will benefit from this important and informative session.”

In preparing for the new translation, “Lifting Up Our Hearts” takes advantage of this teaching moment to renew parishioners’ spiritual life and their appreciation of the liturgy with the result that they will experience more full, conscious, and active Mass participation.

Participants gain this insight through a six-week process of faith sharing in small groups of eight to 12 persons.

Through prayerful reflection on the people’s parts of the Mass, the faith-sharing resources emphasize the role of the assembly and lead Catholics into a deeper understanding of the meaning and significance of the Mass.

Each session of the faith-sharing book highlights specific changes and includes relevant Scripture passages and theological reflection. Participants pray the new texts and respond to faith-sharing questions designed to help connect the Sunday liturgy to their daily lives.

Other upcoming programs focus on changes to Missal:

• Music Ministers Workshop, Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, 9 a.m.-Noon, Cathedral. The workshop will acquaint music ministers with new music for the new translation and how to teach new music to ministers and assembly. Presented by OCP personnel.
• Music Ministers Afternoon of Recollection, Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, 1-4 p.m., Cathedral. The afternoon is an opportunity for music ministers to recollect, reflect, and renew in preparation for Lent and the implementation of the English translation of the new Roman Missal. Presented by OCP personnel.
• Music Ministers Workshop, Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, 3-6 p.m., Cathedral. This is a repeat offering of the Workshop on Saturday, Feb. 12. See above.
• Diocesan Liturgy Conference, Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m, Cathedral. Emphasis will be given to music but there will be offerings for other liturgical ministries, especially that of the Assembly. Presenters will include OCP personnel and others.
• Workshop for Spanish Speakers on the New English Translation, Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, 3-6 p.m., Cathedral. This workshop presented in Spanish will address implications of the new English translation for the Spanish Speaking Community. OCP personnel will present.
• Lifting Up Our Hearts, Fall 2011. Lifting Up Our Hearts may be offered in the Fall rather than the previous Lent or in addition to having been offered then, however parishes choose. RENEW International will offer training early August 2011 over ITV for parishes that have not received it earlier or want it repeated.
• Presbyteral Continuing Education Convocation, Oct. 3-6, 2011, will feature a day with Father Anthony Ruff, OSB, and/or Ken Canedo presenting on the new translation. First use of the new text of the new Roman Missal, First Sunday of Advent, Nov. 27, 2011.
