Christmas joy to you!

+ Most Rev. John B. Brungardt
Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City

My first year as your new bishop has been action-filled, as I have celebrated Mass in all 48 parishes in 28 counties (plus the folks in a quasi-parish; though I still don’t quite know what that means!); visited the students in each of the classrooms of our seven schools (twice), our seminarians in our seminaries (twice), students in many PSR classes, young people in several of our youth groups, Pope Benedict XVI (and I’ll see him again in March during my ad limina Apostolorum visit with the other bishops of Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska), and many other groups and individuals.  What I have discovered is that the Lord has blessed us with a wonderful diocese, with faith-filled people and active parishes.  I thank you all for the wonderful hospitality and welcome you have shown me since I became your bishop-elect on December 15, 2010, and was ordained your new bishop on February 2.

As I ponder the gift of the Incarnation, I have been reading Remember Jesus Christ: Responding to the Challenges of Faith in Our Time, by Father Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM Cap., who was the preacher to the papal household for Blessed John Paul II, and continues this extraordinary ministry for Pope Benedict XVI.  This book contains Father Cantalamessa’s reflections preached to Pope Benedict in Advent 2005 and Lent 2006.  As we strive to abandon ourselves to God’s will, Father Cantalamessa writes:

There is a lovely Christmas legend that can inspire us to come to the feast of Christmas this way, with a humble heart empty of everything.  Among the shepherds who ran to adore the Babe on Christmas night, there was one who was so poor that he had absolutely nothing to offer, and he felt very ashamed.  At the manger, everyone was vying to offer their gifts.  Mary did not know how to receive all of them since she was holding the Babe in her arms.  Then, seeing the little shepherd with his hands free, she entrusted Jesus to him.  Having empty hands was his good fortune and, on another level, can be ours as well.

Let us empty ourselves this Holy Season, and open our arms to receive our Savior, Jesus.  May Christmas bring you a deeper love for the Christ Child.

“… and she gave birth to her firstborn son.  She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7).

Thank you for your welcome to me as your new bishop.  We are all blessed with God’s gift of the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City.  You will be remembered in my prayers during my Christmas Masses.  Trust in the Christmas joy that our Newborn King gives us.  He loves us more than we can ask or imagine!

La Alegria de la Navidad para Ustedes!

+ Reverendo John B. Brungardt
