Reviews are in: Cathedral successfully stages parish mission
It sounded a bit like a Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland musical, but in this case, instead of “gathering the kids” together to put on a backyard musical, Sister Rose Mary Stein, OP, gathered local talent to put on a parish mission.
What makes the move note-worthy is that it’s somewhat unprecedented for a parish to both organize their own parish mission and utilize local talent to serve as guest speakers. Typically a mission is run by an outside party hired to come in and run the show.
Not only was the mission a success, but it drew raves from the attendees. “The sessions this week have touched me in many ways,” noted Joyce Temaat. “I feel it is good to hear the stories of the people you see in Mass. Hearing the stories inspire one in many ways. Keeping the faith can sometimes be difficult, but knowing others share your struggles and trials can be a real comfort.”
The mission, which ran March 11-14, included speakers Marty Neidhart and Aaron Neidhart, Bob Hessman, Barbie Flax, Brian Johnson, Brenda Jensen, Steve and Gale Hall, and Kim Goodnight. Presenters also included Bill Burton, Juanita Sanchez, Cindy Shipley, Juan Ortiz, Annie Peters, and Berenice Wagner.
The theme for the mission was “Living My Faith.” Each presenter shared their personal journey, stories of lived faith and hope amid sometimes great personal adversity.
Hessman shared a tragic and deeply moving story of forgiveness when he came to forgive the man who took the life of his daughter. Jensen spoke of being nourished in faith through offering oneself in service of others.
Shipley, one of the presenters, noted that she was amazed “how God respects and uses each person’s personality and circumstances to draw each one to Himself.
“Each story,” she said, “is tailor-made for that person. I have also been inspired by each person’s determination to endure the bad and rejoice in the good, and how each one celebrates God’s love and mercy in his or her life.”
John Ney expressed the views of many attendees when he noted, “I was glad to hear the faith – acquired faith – renewed faith, of our local people. Outside speakers are great also, but it was nice to hear from our parishioners.”
