Six Adorers of the Blood of Christ celebrate

455 years(!) combined service

65 Years
On Sunday, May 12, Sister Angelita Alfaro celebrated 65 years as an Adorer of the Blood of Christ at the ASC Wichita Center. She made her first vows on July 1, 1948 and final profession on July 1, 1953.
Sister Angelita, daughter of Jose Trinidad Alfaro and Carmen Huaracha of Augusta, Kansas, entered the Adorers of the Blood of Christ on August 30, 1946, began her novitiate in 1947. Sister is a multi-talented individual, receiving her BS, MA and, through a Fellowship from Wichita State, earned a Specialist Degree in Bilingual Education. She used her gifts teaching in many schools in Kansas, Texas and New Mexico. In 1964, Sister became Assistant Professor of Spanish at Sacred Heart College, later known as Newman University. She remained in that position for 15 years.
Besides classroom teaching, Sister Angelita used her skills as Spanish translator, worked with the Catholic Agency for Migrants/Refugees, and was involved in Pastoral Ministry and DRE.
She is currently Living Mission in Later Life at the Wichita Center.
75 Years
On Sunday, May 12, 2013, Sister Carmelita Blick and Sister Irene Schmidt celebrated 75 years as Adorers of the Blood of Christ at the ASC Wichita Center. They made their first vows on August 10, 1938 and final profession on July 1, 1943.
Sister Carmelita was born October 9, 1921 in Hutchinson, Kansas to John N. and Grace B. Blick. Two sisters also entered the ASCs, Sister Joan (deceased) and Sister Noella, as well as five brothers, John W. (deceased), Maurus, Tom, Roy and Fred.
Sister Carmelita’s ministry was mainly in education, including serving as teacher at for 17 years on the elementary level in several schools in Kansas, 22 years on the secondary level mostly at Sacred Heart Academy in Wichita, and 20 years on the college level mostly at Sacred Heart College/Kansas Newman College.
Sister Carmelita retired from teaching on 2000 and is living at the Wichita Center in Wichita, Kansas. She continues to minister in the Wichita ASC archives and a variety of other ways.
Sister Irene entered the Adorers in 1936 from her home parish of St. Joseph’s in Liebental, Kansas. Sister Irene was born in Liebenthal, Kansas to Jacob and Barbara (Schaffer) Schmidt. Three sisters also entered the Adorers: Sister Martina Schmidt, ASC who survives Sister Valeria Schmidt and Sister Barbara Schmidt.
In 1939, she began her ministry mainly caring for the needs of the sisters who ministered in the states of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico.
Her ministry consisted of a variety of jobs as cook, seamstress and laundry supervisor where she learned to be a servant to others. She worked as central service supervisor at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City in the early 1970s, then as a CNA for ASC Health Care at the then Provincialate in Wichita, Kansas in the mid 1970s.  Beginning in 1978, Sister assisted with several duties at the Provincialate including helping in the crises center for children and in the religious correspondence school.
Sister Irene is currently retired and living at the Wichita Center in Wichita, Kansas.

80 Years

On Sunday, May 12, 2013, Sister Evarista Durler, Sister Verena Gunzelman, and Sister Teresa Palsmeier celebrated 80 years as Adorers of the Blood of Christ at the ASC Wichita Center. They made their first vows on August 2, 1933 and made final profession on August 10, 1938.
Sister Evarista, was born in Spearville, Kansas to Englebert and Stephannie (Habiger) Durler.
Sister received her BA from Mt. St. Scholastic in Atchison, Kan. and Masters from Oklahoma State University.
Sister Evarista’s ministry in education began in May 1938 including serving as a teacher in several schools in Kansas and Oklahoma. In Kansas she taught at St. Mary in Marienthal, St. Peter Claver in Wichita, Holy Name in Bushton, All Saints in Wichita, St. Joseph in Humboldt, St. Joseph in Offerle, St. Joseph in Ashland, St. Mark’s School in Colwich, St. Joseph School in McPherson, St. Joseph School inOst, and St. Nicholas in Kinsley. From 1985-1999 Sister Evarista taught at Sacred Heart School in Ness City, Kansas. After retirement she continued to work with students until she moved to the ASC Wichita Center in 2004.
In Oklahoma she taught at Holy Family in Canute, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Sterling, Sacred Heart in Alva. (1940-1949)
After coming to the Wichita Center in 2004, sister continued to tutor and minister as sacristan. She is currently Living Mission in Later Life at the Wichita Center in Wichita, Kansas.
Sister Verena, was born in Garden Plain, Kansas to Peter Augustine and Mary Ann (Betzen) Gunzelman.
Sister Verena earned a Bachelor of Music Degree from Alverno College in Milwaukee and a Masters Degree from the University of Notre Dame.
Immediately following graduation Sister entered the teaching field. Through the years, with music as her main focus, she taught in elementary and high school in parochial and public schools. Her ministry in Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma took her to St. Mary in David City, Neb.; St. John in Spearville, St. Joseph in Andale, St. James in Augusta, St. Joseph in Offerle, St. Mark and Colwich Schools in Colwich, Kan.; and Sacred Heart in Alva, St. Joseph in Bison, St. Eugene in Oklahoma City, Okla.
From 1967-1977 Sister Verena ministered in the Wichita area at All Saints, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Ann’s, Madonna High School, St. Margaret Mary and Carroll High School.
Sister Verena also served in pastoral ministry at St. Francis Xavier in Enid, Okla., St. Francis Xavier in Sikeston, Mo., St. Thomas More in Omaha, Neb., as choir director, organist and liturgical coordinator. Her passion and love for music was enjoyed by all as she directed the Harvest House Choir in Wichita.
She also enjoyed volunteering for the Hospice of Wichita, St. Francis Regional Medical Center and the Senior Companion Program in Wichita.
Sister Verena currently resides at the ASC Wichita Center where she enlivens her community and co-workers by her presence and her interest in all aspects of life.
Sister Teresa was born in Okeene, Oklahoma to Henry and Mary (Schulte) Palsmeier and moved to Garden Plain, Kansas a few years later. She entered the Adorers of the Blood of Christ in 1931.
Sister Teresa ministered almost 30 years in education serving as elementary teacher and principal at Sacred Heart in Ness City, Kansas; St. John Nepomucene in Pilsen, Kansas; Sacred Heart Academy in Wichita, Kansas; and Holy Trinity in Okarche, Oklahoma.
She then served as Provincial of the then Wichita Province for six years. After her term as provincial, she ministered in catechetical work at San Jose Parish in Carlsbad, New Mexico and then moved to Enid, Oklahoma where she began ministry at St. Mary’s Hospital in Enid, Oklahoma as Coordinator of Volunteers, a position she held for 20 years.
Sister Teresa ministered in Corpus Christi Parish in Oklahoma City and was also involved in prison ministry. In 1997, Sister retired and moved to the ASC Wichita Center where she currently resides.
