Diocese establishes Bishop John B. Brungardt

Endowment Scholarship at Newman University

It was both a Christmas gift for the Most Rev. John B. Brungardt, and a financial gift for a multitude of future Newman University students from the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City.
The Diocese of Dodge City, in cooperation with Newman University, has established the Bishop John B. Brungardt Endowed Scholarship Fund to honor Bishop Brungardt. The scholarship will be open to any student from the Diocese of Dodge City enrolled full-time at Newman University, and is especially designed to help those students facing financial needs.
Bishop Brungardt learned about the honor after being presented a framed certificate while at the diocesan staff Christmas party last December.
“This scholarship is a wonderful blessing:  to encourage and support our students wishing a Catholic education at Newman University,” Bishop Brungardt said. “I appreciate the administration and staff at Newman University for establishing classes in Dodge City and Garden City, and providing many other educational opportunities via interactive television in several sites throughout the diocese.

“Thank you for considering a sacrificial sharing to this scholarship to benefit those of our diocesan family seeking a Catholic higher education.”
“The scholarship was launched with a gift of $1,150,” explained David Alexander, Senior Development Officer for Newman University. “It’s an endowed scholarship, which means that the principal will stay intact. The interest that it generates will be what’s available for the scholarship fund.”
He said that once the funds reach the $15,000 mark, “we can award scholarship recipients.”
“It will be a while before we get there,” Alexander noted. “…I have no doubt people are going to support this in Bishop Brungardt’s honor.”
The official “Policies and Procedures…” document for administration of the scholarship noted Bishop Brungardt’s contributions to the Diocese of Dodge City: “Bishop Brungardt consistently visits parishes, movements, and the faithful of the Diocese. He leads a vigorous effort to encourage the discernment of religious and priestly vocations. He has established a bold effort to renew the spirituality of stewardship and to develop the future financial stability of Diocesan ministries. Throughout, he has never stopped being a teacher and is always ready to explain and further the understanding of theological concepts, administrative processes, human relationships, and yes, even intriguing elements of physics.
“Bishop Brungardt proclaims the Good News of Jesus with great joy as he invites, forms, and accompanies believers and non-believers in order to strengthen in faith the Body of Christ.”
Newman University joins the diocese in encouraging donations especially at such times as Bishop Brungradt’s birthday July 10, Christmas, and his ordination anniversary, Feb 2.
Newman University and the Diocese of Dodge City have long collaborated through “Church in Partnership,” which provides pastoral ministry formation, access to Catholic higher education, and other formation programs, primarily through the Interactive Television Network (ITV).
Through this service, students from southwest Kansas can attend Newman classes from any one of 10 different sites throughout the diocese. Classes range from pastoral ministry to elementary education, to social work.
“We are very honored that the diocese included Newman in this way to honor Bishop Brungardt,” Alexander said. “We appreciate the relationship we have with the Dodge City Diocese and Bishop Brungardt.”
