What is Arco Iris?

If your teen came home one afternoon and had suddenly become far more respectful, and instead of the usual weekend activities, they spent each and every Friday evening in a spiritual gathering, you might wonder what had gotten into them.
For hundreds of Hispanic youth across the Diocese of Dodge City, the answer is “Arco Iris.”
For eight years, the program has invited Spanish speaking youth to an intense, four-day retreat where they mix deeply spiritual activities with important lessons in social issues, creating a combination of spiritual and civic formation.
The most recent retreat, March 19-22 in Dodge City, included youth from Scott City, Liberal, Garden City and Dodge City. Among the coordinators are Genaro and Raquel Espino from Garden City, and Maribel and Jose Cervantes and the Villa and Cruz families in Dodge City.     “Arco Iris” doesn’t end when the four-day event concludes. From that point on, participants will attend a prayer session each Monday night, and a group gathering each Friday night, for as long as they want to attend – even into adulthood. And those who already attended the original four-day session will help present later retreats to new participants.
“It was amazing,” said Alondra Banuelos, 15, a student at Dodge City High School. Banuelos was one of 100 youth from across the diocese who attended the four-day retreat in March. “I didn’t expect it to be that touching. But it felt amazing. I actually felt that God came to me and … I felt … wow! It was the most beautiful thing that’s ever happened to me.”
Bernardo DelReal, 16, who also attended the recent retreat, said, “To me it meant a lot. It was a very beautiful thing. You learn how to respect your parents, be a better person. It just opens your eyes to a lot of things …. It makes you appreciate everything.”
“It makes you appreciate everyone” Banuelos added.
“Especially your parents,” DelReal said. He added that he would “definitely” urge other youth to attend. “I invite them all to come and not be scared. At first you’re a little shy, but after you get to know every one you get more comfortable.”
“You can’t really explain how you feel because it was just amazing,” Banuelos said. “There are no words to describe it.”
Father Ted Skalsky also helped lead the retreat, as did Sister Maria Elena Martinez-Sifuentes, MCMI, Sister Enedina Lulo, CFP, and Sister Rosarita Weber, OP.
When asked what he thought of the retreat, Father Skalsky simply said, “It was awesome.”

“Especialmente a tus padres,” dijo DelReal.
