Plagiarism by former SKC columnist

Former SKC columnist, Sister Irene Hartman, OP, has been found to have plagiarized at least 25 of the columns she provided to the SKC. For more than a decade, Sister Irene provided dozens of weekly columns under the title “Holy Ones of Our Times,” and the earlier title, “Charisms”.

It has been discovered that at least 25 of her columns were taken in part from the work of Robert Ellsberg, author of All Saints, Blessed Among All Women, and Blessed Among Us (a collected volume of his work that appeared in the publication Give Us This Day).

According to Give Us This Day editor Mary Stommes, a reader recently called their attention to one instance of potential plagiarism, which led to a more careful review and the discovery that, “Sister Irene not only copied many of Mr. Ellsberg’s words, but she also copied his method of expanding our understanding of saintliness in the range and breadth of those portrayed.”

One article reviewed by the SKC contained phrasing identical to that used in a column by Mr. Ellsberg, whose column was written more than a decade prior to Sister Irene’s.  The SKC trusts fully that the research completed by Liturgical Press, the publishing house of Give Us This Day, is accurate. Therefore, the Catholic has removed all of Sister Irene’s columns from our website, including the issues in which they were contained.

“As a 20-year columnist, I would like to offer my personal apologies to Mr. Ellsberg,” said Dave Myers, SKC editor. “I can’t begin to imagine how I would feel had I encountered someone using my columns in such a way. Ms. Stommes and Mr. Ellsberg have been extremely gracious in their response to this serious issue.”

Sister Irene died at age 95 on Aug. 17, 2017. The SKC urges readers to take a moment to view the books written by Mr. Ellsberg, the links of which are included above.  Coverage will appear in the April 7 SKC.

Liberal resident brings Sunday Gospel, homily, to shut-ins

By DAVID MYERS
Southwest Kansas Register

LIBERAL -- For Don Smith, helping the shut-ins of St. Anthony Parish begins with the press of a little red button.
The button is attached to a $65 digital audio recorder that Smith sets atop the pulpit prior to each Sunday’s Mass. It’s there that Father James Dieker, one of the deacons, or a visiting priest presses the little red “record” button before the Gospel reading.
That’s when Smith goes to work.
Using an audio editing program on his computer, the retired electronics technician edits the Gospel reading and homily into one fluid format, and then uploads the audio file onto the parish website and Facebook page. The file can then be accessed by anyone with an internet connection. In the case of elderly shut-ins, it may mean having a visiting friend or family member present the recording via their Smart Phone, I-Pad, Kindle, or a host of other devices.

Ridding the world of ignorance, one story at a time

By DAVID MYERS
Southwest Kansas Register

Elva Dominguez had had enough.
She was in high school at the time, and was fed up with being pulled out of class to help new students who could only speak Spanish. The particular student she was asked to help this time needed to know where her locker was located; where her classes were.
“I was sick of it!” Dominguez told a crowd gathered at the Dodge City Public Library Oct. 8 to discuss immigration issues. “I told her, ‘I’m not going to answer any more of your questions.’ I told her she had to learn English.”
The girl never spoke to Dominguez again, well, not for some time, anyway.
“A few years later I had to go into a bank and ask for a loan. Guess who the loan officer was? She said, ‘Do you remember me?’ I said, ‘Yes, I do.’ She said, ‘You made me so angry -- so angry that I went and learned English.’
“I guess she wasn’t too angry with me; I got my loan!”

A parish opens its hearts, wallets to serve others

(PHOTOS) On a cool September morning, members of St. John the Baptist Parish in Spearville were busy lifting dozens of heavy boxes filled with food items.
A few cars zoomed by along First Street in Dodge City as the volunteers loaded the boxes from trucks onto dollies. They then rolled the stacks of boxes up a long sidewalk, and carried them one by one down a set of cement stairs into a basement storage room.
They were bringing the donated food into Manna House, a facility in Dodge City that not only serves food to anyone in need, but also provides shelter for the night, and even clothes.

‘God, I thank you for ... Kerygma’

The art of injecting the Good News into PSR classes

By DAVID MYERS
Southwest Kansas Register

Editor’s Note: Catechists all over the diocese, in service to the Church, give much time to the formation of our children.  Following is Part II of the recently presented Catechist Formation Session.  This session focused on how Catechists might make the services they provide even more effective.

Is Catholic teaching in PSR classes a bit too formal?
According to Coleen Stein, Coordinator of Catechist Formation, Catholic Parish School of Religion classes could use a dose of “Kerygma.”
Stein spoke along with Bishop Emeritus Ronald M. Gilmore to catechists at an ITV (Interactive Television) presentation Sept. 4 and 7.
Kerygma doesn’t necessarily have anything do with the distribution of information. So why would Stein encourage its use in the classroom?
Kerygma, she explained, is the “essential news of Jesus”. Instead of enriching the student’s general knowledge about the Catholic Church, Kerygma is about enriching their faith.
It all starts with “proclamation.”
