The Summer Missions Bonus Events are tailored to increase the culture of vocational discernment in our diocese.
The Summer Missionaries provide the hospitality aspects, allowing the mother-daughter and father-son pairs to enjoy a time of leisure together, and learn more about what it means to discern God's call.
While the other Summer Missions programs - Prayer and Action, Totus Tuus, and Camp Cristo Rey - would be very difficult for a parish to plan, staff, and host on their own, these Bonus Events are designed so as to be replicated. The formula is simple: invite parents to step away from the rush of the calendar and into a period of honest leisure with their children. What is done during that time - fishing, grilling, baking cookies, etc. - isn't nearly as important as how it is done. Section 901 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that everything good, including our "relaxation of mind and body, if they are accomplished in the Spirit [...] become spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ."
So please, feel free to "copy and paste" these kinds of events all over our diocese!
