The Gift of Jesus and His Catholic Church

Editor’s Note: The following is taken from Bishop John B. Brungardt’s homily given at the Rite of Election, March 13 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He began by calling children forward, before whom sat a gift-wrapped box on a table.
Who has a birthday this month? How about a wedding anniversary? In December we had Christmas. In May we will have many graduations. What is a custom we have about all these celebrations?
Gift-giving!
We give gifts to our family member or friend to show how special this day is, to show how we love them. A gift is freely given from the heart. We chose it especially for the person. The treasure fits them and their personality and their needs. They feel joy and love from receiving your gift.
What other treasures do we have besides material goods, besides “things”?
• Our health: Thank God for the health of families and ourselves
• A loving God: Psalm 63: “For your love is better than life”
• Our children: God blesses us so much with our children
• Our schools and religious education programs: We learn about God with these gifts
• Our nation: The Lord has blessed us with a fruitful land and many freedoms
• Our parishes and diocese and universal Church: We come together as a community of Christ
But there is another present, another gift, a more important treasure that we want to find. This treasure will bless us more than we can imagine. This treasure will make all these other treasures seems small. [The bishop calls forward a child, who opens the box and pulls from it a Crucifix.]
The treasure of eternal life was given to us on the cross by Jesus. He died a horrible death, and then rose in glory, so that you and I can have life, eternal life.
Catechumens, you are preparing to be baptized, to become Catholic Christians, to share in the gift of faith in Jesus Christ. This baptism “saves you … through the resurrection of Jesus Christ” as St. Peter wrote in the first reading.
Candidates, you are preparing to enter into full communion with the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church that Jesus began 2,000 years ago. “Savor the rich banquet of praise,” that God gives you in this faith, as our Psalmist wrote.
Someday, we will be reunited with our deceased family members and friends in the heavenly kingdom. All the treasures of our earthly life will seem small and insignificant. Material goods, nation, health, parish, all will not matter anymore. We will see God face-to-face. From Mark’s gospel: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
Let us put the gift of the cross first in our lives. Let us make all other things secondary. Jesus, teach us to love you with our whole heart, mind, strength, and being. Jesus, your cross and your Catholic Church are our treasures. Jesus, you love us more than we can ask or imagine!
El Regalo de Jesús y Su Iglesia Católica

Nota del Editor: Lo siguiente es tomado de la homilía del Obispo John B. Brungardt dada en el Rito de Elección, 13 de marzo en la Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Comenzó invitando a unos niños y niñas que pasaran al frente, ante quien tenía una caja envuelta como un regalo sobre una mesa.
¿Quién cumple años este mes? ¿Qué tal un aniversario de matrimonio? En diciembre celebramos la Navidad. En mayo tendremos muchas graduaciones. ¿Qué es una costumbre que tenemos acerca de todas estas celebraciones? ¡Dar regalos!
Damos regalos a miembros de nuestra familia o amistades para mostrar que tan especial es este día, para mostrarles cuanto los amamos. Un regalo se da libremente de todo corazón. Lo escogimos especialmente para la persona. El tesoro les viene a ellos y a su personalidad y a sus necesidades. Sienten gozo y amor al recibir tu regalo.
¿Qué otros tesoros tenemos además de bienes materiales, además de “cosas”?
• Nuestra salud: Gracias a Dios por la salud de las familias y la nuestra
• Un Dios amoroso: Salmo 63: “Tu amor es mejor que la vida”
• Nuestras escuelas y programas de educación religiosa: Aprendemos de Dios con estos regalos
• Nuestra nación: El Señor nos ha bendecido con una tierra fértil y muchas libertades
• Nuestras parroquias y la diócesis y la Iglesia universal: Nos reunimos como una comunidad de Cristo
Pero hay otro presente, otro regalo, un tesoro más importante que queremos encontrar. Este tesoro nos bendecirá más que imaginamos. Este tesoro hará todos estos tesoros aparecer chicos. (El obispo invita a un niño a abrir la caja y sacar un Crucifijo.)
El tesoro de la vida eterna se nos dio en la cruz por Jesús. Murió una muerte horrible y luego resucitó en gloria, para que tú y yo tuviéramos vida, vida eterna.
Catecúmenos, ustedes se están preparando para ser bautizados, para convertirse cristianos católicos, para compartir en el regalo de la fe en Jesucristo. Este bautismo “los salva ... por medio de la resurrección de Jesucristo” como escribió San Pedro en la primera lectura.
Candidatos, ustedes se están preparando para entrar en plena comunión con la Iglesia que es una santa católica y apostólica que Jesús comenzó hace 2000 años pasados. “Saboreen el banquete rico de alabanza,” que Dios les da en esta fe, como escribió nuestro Salmista.
Algún día, estaremos reunidos con los miembros difuntos de nuestra familia y amistades en el reino celestial. Todos los tesoros de nuestra vida terrenal aparecerán chicos e insignificantes. Bienes materiales, nación, salud, parroquia, todo esto ya no importará. Veremos a Dios cara-a-cara. Del evangelio de Marcos: “El tiempo se ha cumplido, el Reino de Dios está cerca. Renuncien a su mal camino y crean en la Buena Nueva.”
Pongamos el regalo de la cruz primero en nuestras vidas. Hagamos todas las otras cosas secundarias. Jesús, enséñanos a amarte con todo nuestro corazón, toda nuestra mente, toda nuestra fuerza y todo nuestro ser. Jesús, tu cruz y tu Iglesia Católica son nuestros tesoros. ¡Jesús, tú nos amas más que nosotros pedimos o imaginamos!
