Pope Benedict XVI and ‘Hope in Christ’

MARCH 9, 2012 -- This morning I visited the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI. The bishops of Region IX (Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Iowa) traveled to Rome March 5-14 for our visit “ad limina Apostolorum” (to the threshold of the Apostles). We celebrated Holy Mass at the four major basilicas of Rome, met with 11 of the Vatican’s congregations, pontifical councils, and tribunals, and had an audience with Pope Benedict.
Today we first met with the Congregation for Clergy, then eight bishops of Kansas and Nebraska went to the Cortile San Damaso (the papal residence and meeting rooms). We were led through many halls and rooms, all filled with magnificent tapestries, statues, and paintings from throughout history. The Monsignor who coordinated the visit gave instructions about the format of the audience, then we entered the large audience room. The Holy Father stood and greeted us individually and affectionately. I kissed his papal ring as he called me “Excellency.” Pope Benedict has such warm eyes and a gentle smile. I said, “Holy Father, I bring prayers and love from the people of the Church of Dodge City in southwest Kansas.” He said, “Thank you.” After photos, we all sat, and each bishop briefly presented different issues common to the dioceses of Kansas and Nebraska, such as vocations, marriage and family life, religious liberty, the Year of Faith, the New Evangelization, and immigration. We each spoke in turn, the Holy Father listened attentively, and after each he made a brief comment (in perfect English, with a slight German accent).
My topic was “Catholic Schools and the Faith Formation of our Children and Youth.” I described to Pope Benedict the strong tradition of Catholic Schools and religious education programs for our children and youth; how we strive to form parents, teachers and catechists in doctrine and pedagogy, as we all assist our children and youth to live and spread the Gospel message of Jesus Christ; how we use new technologies such as Interactive Television and the Internet to catechize in our rural dioceses; the use of stewardship to assist funding Catholic Schools and Religious Education programs; and how we will use the Year of Faith and the New Evangelization to assist our parents, teachers, catechists, children and youth to know, love and serve Jesus our Savior. I closed with, “Thank you, Holy Father, for your prayers, and be assured of our prayers for you and your intentions.”
After all eight bishops shared, Pope Benedict spoke briefly to us. He emphasized fidelity to the teachings of Jesus and His Church. The Holy Father implored us to follow the way and truth of our Savior. Recognizing the challenges we face, he emphasized to hope in Christ, a common theme of his Pontificate. Pope Benedict then gave us each a gift and shook our hands, a group photo was taken, and we departed.
Thank you, dear Lord, for our pope, the vicar of Christ on earth. Give him strength to face the difficulties and joys of our earthly life, as he teaches us the way to our heavenly home. Let us all hope in Christ, who loves us more than we can ask or imagine!

Marzo 9, 2012 -- Esta mañana visite al Santo Padre, el Papa Benedicto XVI. Los obispos de la Región IX (Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri y Iowa) viajaron a Roma marzo 5-14 para nuestra visita “ad limina Apostolorum” (los umbrales de los Apóstoles). Celebramos la Santa Misa en las cuatro basílicas principales de Roma, reuniones con 11 de las congregaciones del Vaticano, consejos pontífices, y tribunales, y una audiencia con el Papa Benedicto.
Ahora nos reunimos primero con la Congregación para el Clero, después ocho obispos de Kansas y Nebraska fueron al Cortile San Damaso (la residencia papal y los cuartos de juntas). Nos condujeron por varias salas y cuartos, todas llenas de magníficos tapices, estatuas, y pinturas de a lo largo de la historia. El Monseñor que coordino la visita nos dio instrucciones sobre el formato de la audiencia, después entramos el cuarto grande de la audiencia. El Santo Padre se paro y nos saludo individualmente y con afecto. Bese su anillo papal mientras él me decía “Excelencia.” El Papa Benedicto tiene unos ojos tan cálidos y una tierna sonrisa. Yo dije, “Santo Padre, le traigo oraciones y amor de la gente de la Iglesia de Dodge City en el suroeste de Kansas.” Él dijo, “Gracias.” Después de fotos, todos nos sentamos, y cada obispo brevemente presento diferentes cuestiones comunes de las diócesis de Kansas y Nebraska, como vocaciones, matrimonio y vida familiar, libertad de religión, el Año de la Fe, la Nueva Evangelización, e inmigración. Cada uno hablo en turno, el Santo Padre escucho con atención, y después de cada uno hizo un breve comentario (en perfecto ingles, con un ligero acento alemán).
Mi tema era “Las Escuelas Católicas y la Formación de Fe de Nuestros Niños y Juventud.” Le describí al Papa Benedicto la fuerte tradición de las Escuelas Católicas y los programas de educación religiosa para nuestros niños y jóvenes; como nos esforzamos por formar a padres, maestros y catequistas en la doctrina y pedagogía, mientras todos asistimos a nuestros niños y jóvenes para vivir y difundir el mensaje del Evangelio de Jesucristo; como usamos la nueva tecnología como la Televisión Interactiva y el Internet para catequizar en nuestras diócesis rurales; el uso del compartir para asistir con fondos a las Escuelas Católicas y los programas de educación religiosa; y como vamos a usar el Año de la Fe y la Nueva Evangelización para ayudar a nuestros padres, maestros, catequistas, niños y la juventud a conocer, amar y servir a Jesús nuestro Salvador. Cerré con un, “Gracias, Santo Padre, por sus oraciones, y este seguro de nuestras oraciones por usted y sus intenciones.”
Después de que todos los ocho obispos compartieron, el Papa Benedicto hablo brevemente con nosotros. Destaco la fidelidad a las enseñanzas de Jesús y Su Iglesia. El Santo Padre nos suplico que siguiéramos la verdad y el camino de nuestro Salvador. Reconociendo los retos que nos enfrentamos, el destaco el tener esperanza en Cristo, un tema común de su Pontificado. El Papa Benedicto después nos dio a cada uno un regalo y nos dio la mano, tomaron una foto de todo el grupo, y partimos.
Gracias, querido Señor, por nuestro papa, el vicario de Cristo en la tierra. Dale fortaleza para enfrentar las dificultades y alegrías de nuestra vida terrenal, mientras nos enseña el camino a nuestra casa celestial. Vamos todos a tener esperanza en Cristo, ¡que nos ama más de lo que podamos pedir o imaginar!
