‘I give thanks to God for the wonderful people of Mexico’
I have been blessed by a great trip to Mexico the month of July. The reasons for my travels were threefold: to study the Spanish language; experience the Mexican culture; and visit the family of one of our seminarians, several bishops and priests, and two religious congregations.
“Only Spanish is spoken here” is the sign in the classrooms of ICC – the Institute of Language and Culture of Cuernavaca, located in the state of Morelos just south of Mexico City. Cuernavaca is known as the “City of Eternal Spring” due to its ideal climate and lush vegetation — I am currently looking out of my classroom window at coconut trees and bougainvillea flowers of every color of the rainbow. Classes are from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, with a coffee/snack break at 10 a.m. All my classes were very intense: one-on-one with excellent teachers. I am learning much, yet I recommend language training early – as children and youth; learning a language is very difficult for us older folks!
I spent weekends visiting throughout Mexico. First, I traveled to Toluca, in the State of Mexico, and Sengio, Michoacán, to visit the family of Juan Salas, one of our seminarians. I met his parents and sister, and the whole family met in the home of Juan’s grandmother for a family reunion (many uncles, aunts, and cousins). What a wonderful family! We celebrated two Masses in the local church, Saint Peter.
The following weekend I went to Torreón, Coahuila to visit Bishop José Galván, where Father Hector de la Vega is from (Father Hector serves in St. Anthony in Liberal). From Torreón I traveled to Durango, in the state of Durango, to visit Archbishop Héctor González, where Father Enrique Estrada is from (formerly in Liberal). My mission was to give thanks to these bishops and dioceses for the gift of these two missionary priests. I was received with great hospitality, and celebrated Masses in their cathedrals.
Last weekend I traveled to Mexico City to visit the Superior Generals of the religious congregations from Mexico that serve in our diocese. I celebrated two Masses with the Missionaries of Charity of Mary Immaculate, whose superior is Mother Petra Palau Oviedo. Sisters Matilde (St. Alphonsus in Satanta), María Elena (St. Mary in Garden City), and Rocío (St. Anthony in Liberal) are from this congregation. With Sister María Elena, we toured the Cathedral, and then the Basilica to view the Tilma with Our Lady of Guadalupe – what a blessed experience! Next, I went to the Passionist Sister’s General House to visit with Mother Aureliana Aguirre and sisters, including Sisters Mavi and Cleotilde (Sisters María Virginia, Cleotilde, and Enedina serve in our Cathedral). We toured their two medical clinics, and I visited with many patients in their clinic for the mentally ill. I joined them in their community prayer, and we celebrated three Masses during my stay. I thanked all the Sisters for their dedicated and generous ministry in our diocese.
Finally, I celebrated Holy Mass in the Cathedral of Mexico City with Archbishop Cardinal Norberto Rivera, and had lunch with Bishop Alfonso Cortés of Cuernavaca.
I give thanks to God for the wonderful people of Mexico, who blessed me with much hospitality and love. I give thanks to God for the many immigrants from Mexico and elsewhere, and my opportunity to better learn the Spanish language and Hispanic culture, thus to better serve as bishop. God blesses us all, of every race, color, language, and country!

Un Pastor y Peregrino en México
He sido bendecido por un gran viaje a México durante el mes de julio. Las razones por mis viajes eran dobles: estudiar español y por la experiencia de la cultura Mexicana—y para visitar la familia de uno de nuestros seminaristas, varios obispos y sacerdotes y dos congregaciones religiosas.
“Aquí solo se habla en español” leía el letrero en los salones de clase en el ICC—El Instituto de Idioma y Cultura en Cuernavaca, situado en el estado de Morelos al sur de la ciudad de México. Cuernavaca es conocido como la “ciudad de la eterna primavera” debido a su clima ideal y exuberante vegetación—estoy actualmente mirando por la ventana del salón de clase a los cocoteros y flores de buganvilia de cada color del arco iris. Las clases son de las ocho de la mañana hasta las dos de la tarde, de lunes a viernes—con una pausa de café y meriendas a las diez de la mañana. Todas mis clases eran muy intensas: uno-a-uno con maestros excelentes. Estoy aprendiendo mucho, sin embargo, recomiendo el entrenamiento de cualquier idioma temprano – como niños y jóvenes. ¡Aprender un idioma es muy difícil para nosotros los mayores!
Pasé los fines de semana visitando por todo el país de México. Primero, viaje a Toluca, en el estado de México y Sengio, Michoacán, para visitar a la familia de Juan Salas, uno de nuestros seminaristas. Conocí a sus padres y hermana, y toda la familia se reunió en la casa de la abuela de Juan para una reunión familiar (muchos tíos/as y primos/as). ¡Que familia tan maravillosa! Celebramos dos misas en la iglesia local, San Pedro.
El siguiente fin de semana fui a Torreón, Coahuila a visitar el Señor Obispo José Galván, donde es el Padre Hector de la Vega (Padre Hector sirve en San Antonio de Padua en Liberal). Desde Torreón viaje a Durango, Durango para visitar el Arzobispo Hector González, donde es el Padre Enrique Estrada (sacerdote anterior de Liberal). Mi misión era de dar gracias a estos obispos y diócesis por el regalo de estos dos sacerdotes misioneros. Fui recibido con gran hospitalidad y celebre misas en sus catedrales.
Este fin de semana pasado viaje a la ciudad de México para visitar a los superiores generales de las congregaciones religiosas de México que sirven en nuestra diócesis. Celebre dos misas con las Misioneras de la Caridad de Maria Inmaculada, cuya superiora es Madre Petra Palau Oviedo. Hermanas Matilde (San Alfonso de Satanta), Maria Elena (Santa Maria de Garden City) y Roció (San Antonio de Padua en Liberal) son de esta congregación. Con la hermana Maria Elena, visitamos la Catedral y luego la Basílica para ver la Tilma de nuestra Señora de Guadalupe— ¡qué experiencia tan bendita! Después, fui a casa general de las Hermanas Pasionistas para visitar con Madre Aureliana Aguirre y las hermanas, incluyendo a las hermanas Mavi y Cleotilda (Hermanas Maria Virginia, Cleotilde y Enedina sirven en nuestra Catedral). Visitamos a sus dos clínicas médicas y visite con muchos pacientes en su clínica para enfermos mentales. Me uní en la oración de la comunidad y celebramos tres Misas durante mi estancia. Les di gracias a todas las hermanas por su generoso y dedicado ministerio en nuestra diócesis.
Finalmente, celebre la Santa Misa en la Catedral de la ciudad de México, con el Arzobispo Cardenal Norberto Rivera y almorcé con el Señor Obispo Alfonso Cortés de Cuernavaca.
Le doy gracias a Dios por la gente maravillosa de México, que me bendijo con mucha hospitalidad y amor. Doy gracias a Dios por los muchos inmigrantes de México y en otros lugares y mi oportunidad de aprender el idioma mejor y la cultura hispana—por lo tanto, para mejor servir como obispo. ¡Dios nos bendice a todos, de cada raza, color, idioma y país!
