An anniversary could be “a date which will live in infamy,” for example, December 7, 1941 and September 11, 2001.  We recognize these dates so we do not forget, and we strive to prevent such events from happening again.

Other anniversaries are joyous occasions, for example, December 12, 1531 and December 9, 2001.  We celebrate these dates, and thank God for the events that happened.

Our diocesan celebration of September 12, 2026 was the latter.  What a blessing as we commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe!  On that date 75 years ago, Bishop John B. Franz was installed as our founding bishop.  “Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4).

The word “Eucharist” means “thanksgiving.”  We are so thankful for the Lord’s gift of 75 years as a Diocesan Church, for 75 years as the People of God in these 28 counties in southwest Kansas.

-- We are thankful for our ancestors, our family members and friends who shared the Catholic Faith with us.

-- We appreciate the deacons, priests and bishops who brought the sacraments to us.

-- We are grateful for the consecrated religious who taught us in our schools, cared for us in our hospitals, ministered in our parishes and communities.

-- We are thankful for those who shared time, abilities/charisms, and tithe/alms with parishes and the diocese; and those who served in our many ministries, especially caring for the poor and those in most need.

-- We are thankful for those who prepared and implemented this day: the Cathedral staff and parishioners, the Chancery staff, the many liturgical ministers from many parishes, the representatives from the religious congregations and parishes, the Diocesan Archives Jubilee Exhibit, and those who participated in the day, and countless others.

-- We appreciate those in the Universal Church who have assisted us in many ways.

-- We are grateful to our Trinitarian God – Heavenly Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit, for giving us life on earth, our Catholic faith, and eternal life.

Thanks be to God for our Catholic Diocese of Dodge City!  The Lord loves us more than we can ask or imagine!
